The Illusion of Permanence

What lies beyond life
is death.

Yet the depth of this certainty
is quietly ignored.

What defies inevitable decay
is the yearning to be immortal—
through writing,
through creating wealth,
through procreation,
through leaving something
of ourselves.

But why at all?

If everyone dies,
then what remains
of all we build,
all we create,
all we accomplish?

Perhaps life lies
somewhere between
the utility of living
and the futility of being

a façade of meaning
we build against
the certainty of nothingness.

The Roof

You deprived me of
wealth, intelligence,
recognition—
you, my gathered
destination of faith,
my organisation of work,
of strengths and debilities.

I had my family beside me;
you took that away too.

My only resource left
was my health.

Then, one by one,
my organs sang in chorus:
damaged, defective—
we give in.

And then, all of a sudden,
despite the failing body,
complete loneliness

you came unto me,
wholeheartedly.

I had never been
so full,
so adequate,
so content.

What a wonder
to discover the light
in you,

the glow of happiness,
the quiet yearning
to want nothing more.

The roof that was never
there in the room

sheltered me now—
not from the storm,
but with calmness,
with respite,
with the strange peace
of finally needing nothing.

Tue Reckoning

No matter what harm you do
to others,
The sky will not come
crashing down
On the failing crown,
Hey, brothers.

Laughable rhymes may
overlook unforgivable crimes,

And death, in time, may
balance inevitable birth.

The circle of life moves on,
indifferent,

While the tolerant earth
silently bears

The good, the wicked,
the just, the cruel—

And leaves the
reckoning to death.

The chain

If you do good

You get a golden chain

If you do bad,

You get a chain.

Coexistence

 Land speaks different languages

But water speaks one

Yet they coexist.

The faceless

If you pierced through
her mundane life,
You'd never feel the
romance she felt—
Being in the kitchen,
feeding people,
Shopping for her inmates,
Turning everyday chores
Into little acts of love.

Her fingers would swell,
At times, they would bleed;
The torture of water—
Cold, boiled, or stale—
Would leave its marks
upon her skin.

Her waist, heavy with work,
Her legs, fatigued
From countless journeys
Through the endless chores
 of the day.

Yet nobody noticed. The meals
were served,
The plates were emptied,
Cleaned.
The sweets were relished—
And the hands that made them
Were forgotten.

This faceless woman
Would still wear her smile,
Her sweetness never
diminishing, Like the sweets
she lovingly prepared
After every single meal.

Perhaps that was her tragedy:
They tasted the sweetness
of her love
But never the bitterness
of her pain.
They called it her duty,
Never once wondering
What it cost her to give.

And tomorrow,
Before the house awakens,
She will return to her kitchen—
Still loving, still giving,
Still waiting, perhaps,
For someone to notice
The woman behind the
meal. And maybe leave some
lines about her
Some time for her that
would give her the wings
to stay or fly away.

A Refrain

Dance.

Different forms,

different styles,

but we're all dancing.

Song.

Different forms,

different voices,

but we're all singing.

Sport.

Different games,

different rules,

but we're all playing.

Food.

Different flavours,

different cuisines,

but we're all eating.

Language.

Different tongues,

different scripts,

but we're all speaking.

Earth.

Different weather,

different beings

living in the same nest.

And yet,

we get caught up in the differences,

forgetting that we're all in it together—

doing the very same things,

mistaking the trees for the forest.

When You're Sixty

When you're sixty,

you're lost on weekends.

There's no thanking God because it's Friday.

In this life beyond nine to six,

there's nothing to look for,

there's nothing to fix.

What rubbish is this, though?

In this life, there's so much to teach,

there's so much to give.

The lessons you've learnt

from greying your hair

may help an office-goer,

or even a youngster,

if you decide to share.

When you're sixty,

you can learn something anew,

something that a nine-to-six engagement

didn't let you pursue.

Child's play

Guns and weapons,

deep-rooted demons—

toy guns, cap guns, whatnot.

Buying and selling go

freely among children.

Not a single one knows

who the enemy is,

but with their guns,

the hooligans hide at ease.

No one loves the earth;

those marketing guns that kill

know nothing of mirth.

Nouns in motion

A joker is joking all the time.

A kid is kidding all the while.

A liar lies,

a cheater cheats,

a fool fools around,

and a dreamer dreams.

Perhaps a person is nothing

but a word in motion—

a noun pretending to be a verb,

a name becoming a habit.

The joker cannot stop joking,

even when the world is crying.

The kid keeps kidding,

even when childhood has quietly left.

The lover loves,

the hater hates,

the seeker seeks,

the wanderer wanders.

And we?

We keep being

whatever we have named ourselves—

until, one day,

we wonder whether

we chose the word

or the word chose us.

বদলেছে পোড়ানোর ভাষা;

স্বামীর চিতায়;

কোনও স্লোগান নয়;

Hello

The world is inside

my phone.

Life is outside

The Lost Voice

Thunderstorm.

In the dark room

A splash of light.

I saw a crawling person,

Easily a white/blue- collared one

with a worried look on the face

'Who's there?'

I questioned.

Silence dominated the space.

'Hey there, I can't hear you,

what on earth are you trying to say?'

No response.

Minutes later

There was another light, a blinding

one,

I could see a group of middle

-aged people

Holding on to their throat.

'Voice, our voice we lost our

voice, we're looking for our voice",

 I imagined the thunder

 reply on their behalf.

শিক্ষকের হাতে চক;

In a Moment

I went to the garden

to look for you,

my love.

You were sick with things

I could not name.

I brought you a little freshness;

for a moment, you were alive.

I went into the forest

and gathered some light for you.

You thought I had bought it.

It warmed you

in the midst of coldness;

for a moment, you were alive.

I went to the mountain,

then down to the sea.

I brought you birdsong

and the breathing of waves,

all of it free.

Your heart, so tired

from the howling machines,

began to beat with ease.

And for a moment,

you were alive.

Who, Then, Am I?

I have almost no command over this body anymore.

My eyes have forgotten how to see.
My ears have forgotten how to hear.
My feet tremble beneath me,
and the soles of my feet
can no longer read the language of the earth.

My kidneys have gone on a permanent strike.
My lungs have grown weary and lazy.
My liver is waiting in the wings,
perhaps preparing to join the rebellion.

And yet—

my heart keeps beating.

Faithfully.
Mystically.
Without asking me
whether I want it to.

In my sixties,

I discovered something
I had somehow never known:

I am not this body.

I don't know how I know this.
I really don't.

I only know that
when the body began to abandon me,
something in me
did not leave.

Something watched.

Something wondered.

Something remained.

And then, almost as strangely,
I discovered that I am not the mind either.

For even the mind—
with all its memories, fears, arguments,
desires, disappointments and dreams—
can be watched.

And if I can watch the mind,
how can I be the mind?

So who am I?

I don't know.

I really, really don't know.

What I do know is that
I can still place one word beside another,
still coax a sentence into existence,
still worry about subject-verb agreement
when almost everything else
has stopped agreeing with me.

There is something wonderfully absurd about that.

The body is failing.
The mind is restless.
The organs are staging their revolts.

And somewhere in the middle of it all,
a sentence survives.

Perhaps that is the joke.
Perhaps that is the mystery.

We spend a lifetime saying,
“This is my body.”
“This is my mind.”
“My thoughts.”
“My memories.”
“My life.”

And then, one day,
life quietly asks:

Who are you?

At this age,
I have no answer.

Only a strange stillness.

Only a question
that has grown larger than the one who asks it.

Only this beating heart.

Only this awareness.

Only this inexplicable
I am.

And for now—

perhaps that is enough.

Thank you.

Thank you.

Thank you.

Words And Feelings

Words rehearse
Produce a prose
Or a verse…

Feelings come and go
Without a halt, with a flow…

Words and feelings hardly meet
A compromised text is somehow built.

Naming the feelings is always a sin
Letters can't capture what's heard and seen.

The air swims, the light glows
The flowers written off as lotus and rose.

Feelings More Than Words

I wish I could love like you.
You have space for enemies and friends.
You accommodate the materialists,
the saints of all times, places, and ages,
much the same.

Full of love, therefore,
you are free from all bondage.

The more I choose, the more I lose.
I stretch my arms without an alarm.
Words may harm, feelings can charm.
