A joker is joking all the time.
A kid is kidding all the while.
A liar lies,
a cheater cheats,
a fool fools around,
and a dreamer dreams.
Perhaps a person is nothing
but a word in motion—
a noun pretending to be a verb,
a name becoming a habit.
The joker cannot stop joking,
even when the world is crying.
The kid keeps kidding,
even when childhood has quietly left.
The lover loves,
the hater hates,
the seeker seeks,
the wanderer wanders.
And we?
We keep being
whatever we have named ourselves—
until, one day,
we wonder whether
we chose the word
or the word chose us.
